E-Bike Safety
Riding an e-bike in Australia needs no licence and no registration, just a few rules worth knowing. Here are the essentials, links to every state's official guidance, and our tips for safer rides.
The national basics
- Power: pedal-assist e-bikes built to the EN 15194 standard are limited to 250W continuous motor output.
- Speed: motor assistance cuts out at 25 km/h. You can pedal faster; the motor simply stops helping.
- Helmets: an approved helmet is mandatory for all riders, Australia-wide.
- Lights: riding after dark requires a white front light, a red rear light and a rear reflector.
- Status: a compliant e-bike is treated as a bicycle: bike paths are fine, and no licence, registration or CTP insurance is required.
Some states apply extra rules to throttle-equipped bikes and rider age. Always check your state's official page below for the latest details.
Rules by state & territory
Each state publishes its own cycling rules. We link to the official sources rather than copying details here, so what you read is always current.
Where SEic bikes stand
SEic electric models are designed to the EN 15194 pedal-assist standard. Lite models are conventional pedal bikes and sit outside e-bike rules altogether.
Safer riding, every ride
- Before you ride: check tyre pressure, both brakes and your light charge.
- In the rain: braking distances grow. Slow down early and take care on painted lines and metal covers.
- Carrying kids, pets or cargo: use genuine racks, seats and accessories, fitted and checked before you set off.
- Keep it serviced: brake pads and tyres are consumables. Regular servicing keeps them doing their job.
Battery & charging
- Charge with the original charger only.
- Charge in a dry, ventilated spot, and avoid unattended overnight charging.
- Don't drop, open or overheat the battery. If the bike sits unused for a while, store the battery at around half charge.
- E-bike batteries are lithium cells, recycle them at a battery drop-off point, never in household waste.
